North Park Colorado: Fly Fishing

A couple weeks ago the crew at North Park Anglers (NPA) were kind enough to have me visit for a couple days and show me around the area. Having only been there only once before I was anxious to get back and experience the vastness of Northern Colorado. I met Scott Graham, who manages NPA and Buffalo Creek Ranch, a few years ago when he managed a fly shop here in Edwards, Colorado. We kept in contact over the past years regarding various fly fishing events and this summer we were able to connect. He was kind enough to put me up in a one bedroom lounge above the shop and fed me whiskey after a day on the water. The only thing he didn’t warn me about was a Volcano Burger at the local restaurant that burned for 2 days after.

North Park Anglers is nestled in the small farming community of Walden Colorado. With the Park Mountains to the west many rivers an creeks meander through the valley floor to reach the North Platte River.

Scott brought me to some amazing sections of water on the Michigan, Illinois, North Fork and The North Platte Rivers. Not seeing another soul on the water we prospected the deep under cut banks with streamers for aggressive Brown Trout. The Wild Brown and Rainbow Trout in these rivers average between 16-18 inches with larger two handed trout very common. Although we didn’t quite hit the two hander mark we came close with several Brown and Rainbow trout that were violently inhaling streamer patterns. Our best fish was a toss up between a Rainbow on the North Platter and a Brown Trout on the North Fork. Both fish are pictured here so you be the judge. On a last minute try we hit a deep plunge pool on the Illinois River and Hooked a two handed Brown Trout that bent the hook out on the Olive Streamer Fly.

We barely scratched the surface of the water in my limited time there but it will be a place that I certainly return to in the near future. If you are looking for a last minute fly fishing destination in Colorado do not overlook North Park Colorado. They are way off the beaten path and once you get there you will see why anglers from around the country choose to visit. Thanks a ton to Scott and the boys at NPA.
