Much like last weekend and the weekend before, most of the freestone rivers in Colorado are high and off color. Warmer temps also have water pouring over Cheesman Reservoir bumping up the flows on the South Platte. As runoff slows down, water levels around the state should start to level out and drop over the next few weeks. Until then, anglers are going to be limited to tailwaters and lakes. I have heard good reports coming from the Taylor River and that fishing has been good despite heavier flows. With water levels around 500 CFS, plenty of Mysis Shrimp should be in the Taylor River System. If you decide to make the drive be prepared to see some anglers, the only real fishable section of the Taylor is the stretch below the dam. If fishing isn’t in the stars, the GoPro Mountain Games are in Vail this weekend boasting numerous events like dock dogs, kayaking, rock climbing, mud run, BMX and concerts.
Theres is also a fly casting competition put on by Costa called the 2 fly extreme. The two day event has anglers from all over competing for a chance at a thousand bucks. The three part competition is comprised of 2 fly casting events followed by a day of fishing, where the top 8 anglers try to land the biggest and most fish. This is a fun event to watch and a great weekend for the whole family. Be sure to get there early if you want a parking spot. The GoPro Games bring in a huge crowd.
