Weekend Update: Arkansas

Colorado’s Arkansas River may be one of the most underrated streams in the state.  With good hatches of caddis, mayflies, stones and midges the bug life on the Arkansas is bar none some of the best on Colorado’s western slope.  To make matters even better brown trout are the predominant trout species swimming in the river.  Late summer and fall brings some of the best fly fishing of the year for aggressive brown trout, the Ark may be one of the best streamer fisheries in the state.  Great fishing coupled with ample public access makes the Arkansas a true Colorado treasure and most precious resource.

Whether you want to fish dry flies on the famed Arkansas headwaters near Leadville or strip giant rodent like streamers under cuts banks as you float through Buena Vista and Salida, the Ark has a little something for everyone.

Right now on the Arkansas we are seeing great stream flows of 324 CFS near Salida and Buena Vista.  Streamers like Double Bunny’s or Sex Dungeons in hook sizes 6-14 have been hooking a lot of nice browns in the early mornings and late evenings.  Searching the pocket water with a Stimulator or Elk Hair Caddis in hook sizes 14-18 has also been very productive especially when dropped with bead head pheasant tails and caddis emergers in hook sizes 16-20.  Of course indicator nymph fishing has been good, especially when working the deep pools and slow seams.
